Pink of Sorts

Even with all the flu crazinesss looming around in Houston, we are braving the Childrens Museum to celebrate a special new little friend who has fallen in love with Isabela. Joshua will be 6 years old and from what I can tell from being in his massive playroom, he has everything a boy could want. But, when I asked his mom, Blanca for gift ideas, she quickly remembered his pointing to toy kitchen pots and pans and kitchen appliances. Of course, I was glad to go by Target and pick them out!

As I diligently focused on my goal in Target, not straying from my mission (yeah right, I managed to pick up a cami), I got to the appropriate aisle and was instantly disturbed at my findings! There was a complete overhaul of "Pinkalicious"! There was pink, there was pink gingham, there were pink pastries... Seriously??? Why?? I reached for my phone to let Blanca know that I was quite disappointed with the options. I wouldn't even want Isabela to have any of the assorted pink madness. Blanca agreed and as a mother of two boys, she felt discrimination. I felt it for her, too. What an injustice for a parent who is cool enough to let her son have a toy that usually comes with, well, you know, a girly stigma, but be so let down.

Determined for her son to have the kitchen toys, she offered to pick up the blue and white toys she had seen at her area Target. So, I moved on to the book area to find Beginning Reading books for Joshua- something I easily know how to do :-) As I turned a corner, excited to go to to such a familiar place, I was stumpped by something. PINK LEGGOs! Seriously!! WHY oh WHY??? First thing I thought, "gross!"

I can love pink. I really can. But, I don't appreciate it when it sets out to separate Isabela from her male counterparts. I need my little girl to be encouraged to unify with all the little boys in her life. I want her to celebrate all the beautiful, classic colors that come with them.

There is a time and place for Pink.
