I have so many fond childhood memories of the festivities on the night before Easter with my mom. We would sit around the make-shift kitchen table in anticipation of seeing my mom round up all of the empty egg shells collected from the first day of January. Every scrambled egg was remembered as we dyed each egg shell as the first step in creating the "confetti eggs". Then we would all watch my mom prepare our version of glue; to seal the hole with pieces of paper as the final touches. The mixture we used as glue was actually an egg white. Gosh, we really were poor! Anyhow, it was always such a cool tradition.
Yesterday, we did just that, just not the night before Easter. We just found a beach house in Galveston, so we want to take Isabela out into this beautiful Spring world. We just have to make sure we are all ready to go for Easter as we return that afternoon just in time for an egg hunt at her cousin's house. It took us 4 hours to create 3 1/2 dozen eggs! Several of them never made it into fruition either because they sort of got a strong grip from our little Isabela :-)
Crystal and I first saw it as a "thing to have to do", but after an hour or two, we were so enthralled with it as we were competing with creating the coolest looking ones. We also had a colleague/friend of mine join. Isabela loves Ms. Jennie. She is from Minnesota and our "cascarones" were totally new to her.
It was a blast, my girls and a friend, pairing a cultural tradition with such an important holiday...perfect.
